Herbert Samuel "Wayne" Starkes
December 7, 1947 - September 19, 2026
Herbert Samuel Wayne Starkes was born on December 7, 1947 in Musgravetown Newfoundland to Samuel and Janet (Welcher) Starkes. Wayne had many happy memories of his childhood and youth and loved being a part of a large family. He was always happy to share numerous stories of the antics he and his sisters and brother would get up to when he was younger. He was a true Newfoundlander and loved getting back home whenever he could.
Wayne moved West in his 20's and settled in Calgary. He had a few jobs before becoming a postal carrier with Canada Post. He truly loved his job and took great pride in his work. No weather deterred him from making his deliveries and he received many awards for braving the conditions during blizzards and rarely missing a day's work. He retired from the Post Office on his 60th birthday and made the most of the next chapter in his life. He never lost his love of walking and in the last few years thoroughly enjoyed his daily stroll around the lake. Some days he would make the trip around up to five times which was five miles. On October 27, 1990, Wayne married his soul mate Rosalynn Horne. The two shared a deep and lasting love and were rarely apart.
They bought a house in NE Calgary and made a beautiful life and home together. Wayne and Rosalynn's home was always open to anyone who wanted to come and stay. Whether just for a night or an extended stay they were always delighted to have guests. Wayne also provided many of us with chauffeur services to the airport or really anywhere we wanted to go in the city. Their hospitality was always incredible. They loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. Their trips to Newfoundland were always a special time and thankfully he was able to make the trip one last time in August 2024. They also thoroughly enjoyed their trips to France with Ben and Lisa.
In the last couple years Wayne's health declined but he was always still pleasant, full of stories and happy to visit. He also never lost his enjoyment for a great meal along with a cocktail. He celebrated his 78th birthday with a fantastic meal from his favorite restaurant, cake, and of course a beer!!
Wayne passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026, at the Olds Hospital Long Term Care. He was predeceased by the love of his life Rosalynn in January 2023, who he shared 32 years of marriage filled with love and devotion, his parents; sisters Effie Dafoe, Phyllis Philpott, Lizzy Starkes, Betty Wiseman, Anne Hancock, Dulcie Feltham, Kathy Muggridge and brother Sterling Starkes.
Wayne is survived by brother- in- laws Merle Feltham, Geoff Muggridge, Laverne Horne and sister- in- laws Sharon Starkes, Georgetta Horne and Dorothy Horne. He is also survived by numerous extended family and close friends. Wayne lived life to the fullest and will be missed by many.
A private service and interment will be held at the Olds Cemetery on October 3, 2026 at 1p.m. followed by a private gathering at the Olds Legion.
If friends so desire a memorial tribute may be made in Wayne's honor at the charity of the donor's choice.
