John Boschman
March 5, 1949 - September 5, 2026
John Boschman, beloved husband of Frieda Boschman, went to meet his Lord and Saviour on Saturday, September 5, 2026. He was 77 years old.
Born on March 5, 1949, to David H. Boschman and Tina (Sawatzky) Boschman, John was raised on a farm four miles north of Coaldale, Alberta.
After graduating in 1967, John spent two years at Bethany Bible Institute, where he met his wife, Frieda (Fast) Boschman. In August of 1970, the two of them were married, and made their home in Coaldale, not far from where John grew up. Two years later, John and Frieda welcomed a son, Darren, into their budding family, who was followed quickly by their daughter, Sheri.
John worked hard throughout his life to support his family, spending most of his career at TELUS before working for the Town of Coaldale and eventually retiring. He also embodied a spirit of service and was always looking for ways to help anyone in need.
During their retirement, John and Frieda spent nine winters in Arizona, where John discovered a love of desert hiking and enjoyed many hours visiting with new and old friends. Back home, he could often be found riding his bike around Coaldale while listening to K-Love Christian radio or meeting a friend or family member for coffee. He and Frieda also enjoyed regular camping trips throughout southern Alberta and into southern British Columbia.
John’s faith in Jesus Christ was central to all that he did. He was an active member of and volunteer at his church, and he enjoyed visiting after services so much that people often joked he stayed until it was time to lock up. His friendliness extended far beyond the church: whether he was with friends in Arizona or speaking with a cashier at the grocery store, John was always ready for a conversation.
In December 2025, John and Frieda moved to Olds to be closer to family. John is lovingly remembered by his wife, Frieda; his children, Darren (Rebecca) Boschman and Sheri (Lane) Elliott; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his siblings, Mary (Allan) Megli, Frieda (John) Dueck, and Henry Boschman; and his brother-in-law, Lyn “Barney” Barnaby. He was predeceased by his parents; his siblings David Boschman, Margaret Opinko, Peter Boschman, Anne Pauls, and Helen Barnaby; and his great-grandchild, Natalie Goodbrand.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the Evangelical Free Church in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Dear Frieda and family, we are so sorry to hear of John’s passing. You were such amazing neighbours to Mom and Dad and then to Lansing and Ian and we were sorry to hear that you moved from Coaldale, but were praying for John’s recovery. Lane and I were just talking about you both hoping that all was well, and said that we missed our conversations when we saw John outside tinkering in the yard. You will forever be in our hearts and we are so sorry we are not able to make it to his celebration of life, but we are keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers and on behalf of the Kimura, Jacobson, and Mills families, we wish you peace and comfort as you go through this difficult time.
